Unciphered is a cryptocurrency recovery company that helps people and institutions regain control over their crypto assets where they lost access to their keys or credentials. We do this through modeled password attacks, hardware exploits, forensic investigations and tools, and other proprietary methods. If you are in a situation where you cannot access your crypto in a self-custody wallet, we can help. In a phrase, we are the locksmiths of the crypto space.
Note: Unciphered doesn’t service cases where lost access is due to fraud.
Who is Unciphered?
We are a team of highly specialized engineers, cryptographers, ethical hackers, security professionals, operational leaders, and client service experts that understand the intricacies required in giving customers the best chance of successfully regaining access to digital assets.
What differentiates Unciphered from the many recovery firms out there?
Most recovery firms consist of a couple of people popping up in an office suite, with generalized skills, narrowly focused on cracking passwords, using publicly available tools (that everyone else is also using). Conversely, Unciphered has dedicated lab and security infrastructure with a large team where each member has a deep specialization critical to a broader spectrum of recovery scenarios. Unciphered heavily invests in research; continually identifying vulnerabilities in wallets and developing bespoke tools and procedures, not available anywhere else, that are purpose-built for maximizing crypto recovery success.
Where is Unciphered?
We are a US-based operation distributed through the East Coast, West Coast, and Central United States. For the safety of our customers and our team, our brick and mortar locations are not listed publicly. We service customers globally.
Customer Experience
I can’t access my crypto. Can Unciphered help?
Long answer short: Possibly. There are many situations and circumstances where Unciphered can help regain access to wallets.
Yes - Up to a point. We respect the need to feel safe, build trust, and maintain anonymity, and we will accommodate this as far as we can into the process. If you want to reach out for us to evaluate your case and give you an expert opinion before providing your legal name, that’s fine. But when it’s time to go to contract we will go through a KYC Check (Know Your Customer) which will verify your identity. We cannot perform recoveries for anyone where we don’t know who the person is. Having said this, we do not store, share, or report this information about you anywhere to anyone.
Each recovery is different, but our general policy is that it will be a percentage of the recovered assets (except in rare cases). This means that in most cases, we will not need any payment up front and we will only take a fee if and when we recover your assets.
Can I pay in crypto?
Yes. In most cases the payment will be in a percentage of the assets recovered in that cryptocurrency. In some cases you can pay in a different currency if that is desirable and agreeable to both parties.
Are your fees and “standard rates” similar to other recovery firms?
-There are no “standards” regarding pricing in the crypto recovery space. Some firms do have similarities between their rates - because they are performing very similar services and competing with each other. They are generally all doing the same limited scope of password cracking with the same open source tools (brute force).
-Unciphered brings deep R&D investments, custom tooling, and assigns a team of world-class engineers to your case which means a higher internal cost. We assess each case to understand how we will apply these resources to determine the rate, which may be the same or vary from other firms
-A word of caution. Recovery firms with a “standard rate” generally do this because they are doing the same thing for all of their cases. This should be a signal that they aren’t focused on what makes your case unique and the most appropriate and effective path toward recovery success.
Additional
How long is a typical recovery?
Just as all cases are different, recovery times can vary depending on many factors. There is no typical recovery time for cases. That being said, during the evaluation phase, your case manager will be able to give you a scope of work that Unciphered will be performing and a timeframe for that work to be completed. Usually the length of time, and estimating it correctly, depends on how reliable the information we receive about the situation. People’s memories fade over time, or recall events slightly differently, it can throw off the approach, scope, and scale.
I have a hardware wallet. How do I get it in your hands (to your lab)?
We have options that range in reliability and security which will be discussed between you and the Case Manager to determine what is agreeable to both Parties.
What tools do you use for a recovery effort?
The tools we use have been developed in-house by our engineering team. They are not publicly available, nor are they shared with third parties. We are aware of the publicly available tools that exist which are used for cracking wallets (hashcat, btcrecover, etc.). Our tools were born out of frustration with the limited capability and results of these publicly available tools. Driven by our R&D they are purpose-made to be superior which uniquely have the highest chance of successfully recovering wallets than other firms. We also take difficult cases that other firms don't, so each case is a learning experience that feeds back to R&D, iterative upgrades to our tools, surpassing the static scope and capability of the open source tools.
